This week, TIME released The Opioid Diaries, a groundbreaking issue chronicling the drug epidemic seizing America. James Nachtwey photographed the project over the course of the past year, documenting addiction and death, but also recovery, and resilience.

Dr. William J. Barber II , who addresses racial inequalities in how the U.S. handles drug addiction.
