Are performance reviews sexist? New research says yes.

What motivates you to do your best work? Are you driven to beat the competition or earn your boss's praise? Or is it more an internal push to excel? I can tell you what doesn't inspire me and many other workers: the annual performance review, that excruciating corporate exercise where you're forced to reflect on your strengths and weaknesses. It's common for women to struggle with these evaluations, since they require a degree of self-promotion that can be uncomfortable. And there's plenty of research that suggests they're not very effective, so maybe it's time to scrap them in favor of a system that focuses on concrete metrics* over the ability to toot your own horn. The "self-promotion gap" contributes to the gender pay gap and ultimately, to the retirement savings gap. Check out today's edition for recent research on performance reviews.
* Speaking of metrics, one I'm measured on is how many subscribers open this newsletter, so thank you for reading!
