But what you might not know is that there's a large web of smaller, sneakier consumer reporting agencies tracking everything from when people rent a new home or change a job to when they miss a utilities payment or apply for health insurance.  For Money's August digital cover story, reporter Adam Hardy dove into what exactly these agencies are looking for… and what they do with the information they find.
