Every year, I look forward to working with my team on our holiday toy guide. It’s a gift to spend work time sorting through toys and thinking back to when they were all I wanted. As my kids get older, their wants and needs are less creative and varied. Buying gift cards and skin-care products brings me little joy—though I’m thankful to be able to do so.

If you’re shopping for children, check out this year′s best-toys list. It has something for everyone, including budding scientists, artists, and explorers. I’m getting the candy-vending machine for my niece, who’s turning 6 today. I love that it’s a stealth STEM toy.

Toys aren’t just for little ones. As my colleague Eliana Dockterman reports, sales of toys in the ″kidult″ market (people over 12) have increased significantly during the pandemic. Sure, it reflects a shift in marketing strategy. But it also meets a need. Don’t we all need some fun and comfort? Ellie, the stuffed elephant on my desk, says yes.

What’s on your wish list this year, for yourself or the children in your life? Write to me at andrea@time.com. I’m not Santa, but I’m always looking for inspiration, and you never fail to delight me.

Best,
Andrea
