Menopause is finally going mainstream

I can sometimes spot health trends in my email inbox. If I notice I'm getting a lot of news alerts or public-relations pitches on the same topic, I take note.

Recently, that began happening with menopause. I started to get emails from a flurry of startups catering specifically to people going through this transition, as well as news updates about drug makers developing therapeutics for symptoms like hot flashes and sleep problems.

Doctors I spoke with said they’ve noticed the same thing—and not a moment too soon. Menopause has traditionally been neglected in medical training, research, and practice, meaning that many people who go through this change do not get adequate treatment or education and suffer through serious discomfort in silence. It will take a long time to fix that situation, but signs of progress are finally here.
