February 07, 2026 50 movies to watch this weekend BY SAM JACOBS Editor in Chief, TIME Many of us in the U.S. are suffering through one of the longest stretches of cold weather in memory. If your household is like ours, you may be reaching the bottom of your list of things to watch as you wait for warmer days. Thankfully, TIME film critic Stephanie Zacharek is here to save us all. Over the last few months, she has been gathering up what she considers to be the 50 most underrated films of the 21st century.  Zacharek writes, "I've compiled a list of films, from the early days of this century to the present, that may have fallen through the cracks upon their initial release, pictures worthy of a second look or a first-time discovery. I look back with great fondness on the texture of moviegoing in the first 20 years of this century, that feeling of stepping into a theater and hoping that you were about to discover something great, or maybe even just something strange and wondrous—a 1930s-style musical with an all-Black cast, like Idlewild, or a magical English-language version of The Magic Flute set during World War I, or a velvety historical romance like Bright Star. Sometimes it's the modestly scaled, or even ambitious but flawed, pictures that stick with you for years, and decades." My personal favorites from this list? 25th Hour, Top Five, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. I hope you find yours too. And Zacharek remains the world's leading advocate for the Blake Lively shark thriller The Shallows, which she includes not only here but among her best films of 2016.  There is so much that I want to see here.
