Do you plan to stay put in retirement? Most older adults do want to age in place, as the saying goes. But what may seem like the easiest option can eventually turn complicated. Routine tasks like changing the lightbulb and rotating seasonal clothes become more difficult with age. Happily, companies are beginning to recognize the business opportunity that these challenges present and are offering solutions to help — while at the same time letting retirees make some extra spending cash by putting their skills to use. Umbrella, a Brooklyn-based company founded by millennials, is doing just that. Read about them in today’s edition.

Best wishes,

Elizabeth

READER INSIGHTS

Money’s social media expert, Matt Bemer, asked a very timely question in our Retire with Money Facebook group this week. Matt just got married a few weeks ago, and he’s laying down a responsible financial foundation for the future. Where should he park his emergency cash? he wondered. While the Federal Reserve has raised benchmark interest rates twice this year, regular savings accounts still aren’t paying all that much in interest. Members responded in force, generously sharing their banks’ interest rates, account minimums and even customer service details. Many liked Ally, an online bank Matt had been considering that that pays 1.8% APY. Some members offered further tips, such as making sure it’s easy to transfer money back and forth to his primary checking account. Matt was grateful for all the responses and adds, “If anyone wants to weigh in with how to start a CD ladder, I’d be open to hearing about it!” Follow the discussion here.
