Hello good citizens of Parentland,

I bring you this week a warning. My offspring are out of the house for a little while and so I went grocery shopping alone, which I rarely get to do. Wandering up and down the aisles, I could not remember what I liked to eat. I reached for spinach pasta and realized that I only bought that because one child liked it. I got excited when i saw the Corn Thins were back in the store, but then recalled that Corn Thins are not really my thing, they are my kids'. (I once made Corn Thins and Vegemite for International Food Day at my children's primary school. It was not popular.) Here's a tip: write down what foods you enjoy now while you still remember them, so that you can have a handy list for when you get to shop solo, and don't end up like me, leaving the store with only a can of tomato soup and a box of kosher salt. There's good news that goes with this warning, however. Apparently, becoming a parent means you will eat anything, forever, which comes in handy. In this newsletter, all the big parenting news of the week, plus some crazy stories you never knew you needed.

As ever, you can reach me at belinda.luscombe@time.com or @luscombeland on Twitter.

There has been a LOT of discussion in the parentsphere about family size recently. How siblings interact. How the second child will probably ruin your life. How only children are spoiled and entitled. And now, some fascinating new data on only children suggests that while they might be different from those with siblings, they are not better or worse off. Scientific American breaks it down.

In Germany, there is no home-schooling. Some parents have tried to challenge that, but they keep losing. Is this a wise attempt to make sure kids aren't raised in the type of environment Tara Westover describes in Educated? Or is it an example of the state interfering too much in the affairs of its citizens? TIME

This was a week in which the actions of a teen boy dominated the news cycle. Did he taunt a Native Elder or not? Was he more sinned against or sinning? A not dissimilar situation lit up the private school circles of New York City when a video emerged of young girls dancing around like monkeys in black makeup. Were they being racially insensitive? Or was the person who put up a two-and-a-half-year-old video of 12 year old girls fooling around with cosmetics the one who was the problem? Nobody could agree. Which is why I think my colleague Jeff Kluger's piece about what we only think we see is so smart. TIME

Parents of kids with substance abuse issues are often completely at a loss as to how help their kids get back to school after they've been through rehab. Often, the return to their old haunts and old friends can lead to a relapse. So a new string of specialized high schools for kids dealing with addictions as sprung up. Here's what they're like. TIME

If you've ever dabbled with the idea that your kid could be an Instagram/YouTube/social media star, then this will cure you. The Cut.

Speaking of this here internet and all the little moving pictures we watch on our little phones, if you haven't seen Will Ferell's video about parents and phones, it's worth checking out. FunnyorDie

PFFT: Parenting from Famous Types

Chance the Rapper, rapper (d'oh) and father of one

"There was never a point, ever, in my life where I can remember loving someone as much or more than I love my mom until I met my daughter. So, it made me understand that my mom loves me more than she loves anybody in the world, and that's crazy to me."
