These days, roommates aren’t just for college students or recent grads. Increasingly, older adults are also sharing their homes with people they’re not related to. While financial concerns typically motivate the move, companionship often follows. Today’s featured story profiles four women who bought and renovated a house together in Ontario, Canada. Their neighbors call them the “Golden Girls” of Port Perry, and there’s a lot to love about their story. One of my favorite parts is the proactive approach that the organizer, a widow, took to planning for her older age. Many of us prefer to sidestep the likelihood that we will need help eventually. While this impulse is understandable, the irony is that talking about future infirmity, and planning for it, often leads to better outcomes. “If you recognize it’s going to happen anyhow, then take control,” says Louise Bardswich, 67, the organizer. Learn how she did just that in today’s edition.
Best wishes,
Elizabeth
