Remember those old commercials for Syms, the men's discount clothier, "Where an educated consumer is our best customer?" My dad used to quote that line when I was growing up, so I got the message at a tender age. We all want to be savvy consumers -- smart shopping leaves more money in our wallets and in our retirement accounts. But there's one arena where it's really hard to comparison shop, despite our best efforts: health care. Surprise medical bills seem to come out of nowhere, even from in-network hospitals. Drug prices are all over the map, and your outlay largely depends on your particular health conditions and your insurance plan. While efforts have been made to increase transparency in medical pricing, we've got a long way to go. Companies have stepped into the breach with their own tools. For example, GoodRx has an app that allows you to research the retail price of medications at pharmacies near you (that's the price you'd pay without going through your insurance, which is sometimes cheaper than your insurance co-pay). Learn more about GoodRx and other apps to help save you money in today's edition.
Best wishes,
Elizabeth

This week in our Retire with Money Facebook group, members discussed a recent story that said many millennials aren't saving for retirement because of climate change. The prevailing sentiment seems to be, why save for a very uncertain future? Climate change is scary for sure, but so is poverty in old age. One poster summed up my thoughts exactly: "Adapting to global warming will take a lot of things, including money. They need to save more."
