One of the most useful tidbits I've picked up in my years writing about retirement is the location of the fountain of youth. Before I let you in on the secret, though, let's talk about where the fountain of youth isn't: you won't find it in St. Augustine, Fla., although you can visit a park there that commemorates explorer Ponce de Leon's quest for eternal youth in the 16th century; you won't find it in all the wrinkle creams and serums at the drugstore, although goodness knows I've tried; and you won't find it in vitamins and supplements, most of which just give you "expensive pee," in the colorful words of a source of mine who's both a financial advisor and a medical doctor. So, where do you find the closest thing we have to a fountain of youth in the early 21st century? In the gym! Or on a local walking path or pickleball court. Exercise is the magic elixir, folks. It protects our bodies and brains from some of the ravages of age, prolonging our time in good health. And it doesn't have to cost much, if anything. In today's edition, learn about the thriving pickleball community in the Los Angeles area, and search for courts near you.
Retire with Money will be off on Friday. Happy Thanksgiving!
Best wishes,
