As 2019 comes to an end, here's a look back at some of the year's most popular history stories on TIME.com. Impeachment tops our list—unsurprisingly, given the news—but no single theme dominated the year. We looked back to major moments like the D-Day invasion. We looked forward to how the next generation will learn about turning points like 9/11. And we saw how the stories of decades-old events, like the Kent State shootings, can still evolve.
