I picked what turned out to be an apt name for my daughter Rosie. She has a rosy outlook, and she radiates optimism and confidence, like her father. Often, she'll earnestly say, "Today is the best day of my life! Wait, no—tomorrow will be." She falls asleep listing what she'll be most excited to wake up to.
Her spirits have remained remarkably high the past six months. She gamely greeted remote learning as a chance to buy a bulletin board for her room, which displays this handmade calendar. It's similar to countdown calendars she's made before, ticking down the days until she gets to visit her cousins at Christmas or her grandparents on Cape Cod. But this differs notably. It's not a countdown to anything exciting, She's just marking time. She diligently adds a check when she logs off after each school day.
Public schools in our state mandate around 180 instructional days per year. Will she do this for all of them? Does it expose a shift in her sunny mindset, or am I projecting that on her? Now I'm considering starting my own calendar. There's something to be said for seeing every day that passes as an achievement in and of itself.

Students are taking to the streets to protest, and that's nothing new. Read about a 1964 school boycott in which nearly half of New York City's public-school population stayed home to protest segregation.
The world has been mourning the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. This TIME for Kids article is a good starting point for talking to your kids about the life and legacy of the second woman Supreme Court Justice.
