The Dow Jones Industrial Average snapped a six-session winning streak Thursday ahead of the final trading day of 2021. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also closed lower on the day.
Semiconductor stocks weighed on the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite. Micron Technology and AMD each lost more than 2%.
Cruise stocks also struggled. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended Americans avoid cruise travel regardless of vaccination status. Norwegian Cruise Line fell 2.6%. For the year, the S&P 500 is up more than 27%. The Dow is nearly 19% higher and the Nasdaq Composite has returned about 22%.
"2021 was a terrific year for the equity markets," said Commonwealth Financial Network's Anu Gaggar.
"Between federal stimulus keeping the economy going, easy monetary policy from the Fed keeping markets liquid and interest rates low, and the ongoing medical improvement leading to surprising growth, markets have been in the best of all possible worlds," Gaggar added.
