As 2021 comes to a close, here’s a look back at some of the year’s most popular history stories on TIME.com. In a year marred with misinformation and conspiracy theories, articles that debunked historical myths struck a chord. The most-read story in our section was “We've Been Telling the Alamo Story Wrong for Nearly 200 Years. Now It's Time to Correct the Record —apt for a year when Texas enacted a bill designed to restrict the way history is taught, amid a wave of similar laws nationwide.

The rest of the chart-toppers are an eclectic bunch: World War II continues to be a popular topic for readers, especially around the 80th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. We saw continued interest in the British royals, between the death of Queen Elizabeth II’s husband Prince Philip and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s primetime interview with Oprah Winfrey. And in a year when Americans have to show proof of vaccination in many contexts, it’s perhaps unsurprising that a story on smallpox vaccine passports in the 19th and 20th centuries was widely-read.

Happy New Year, and we look forward to bringing you more stories in 2022. Here’s the history that made news this year:
