A most-unwelcome return from August Recess

It was quite the week for Washington.

It began with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy returning to open session for the first time since July and opening an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden for allegations of corruption that, to this point, lack evidence. The White House set into motion a now-familiar response to impeachments: fight the politics, not the merits. A government shutdown loomed, and McCarthy shot back at his conservative flank causing him trouble with a simple message: don’t test me or your luck. Before the week ended, federal prosecutors had indicted the President’s son, Hunter Biden, on three charges linked to the purchase of a gun while using drugs. And one of the White House’s favorite columnists dared to suggest it’s time for the President to retire.

It marked the official end of any sleepiness the summer brought. And next week shows no sign of slowing down with a government shutdown looming with as few as nine working days until the spending has to stop and lights go dark.

Scroll down for what else TIME’s team has reported this week.
