The regulatory battle over humanoid robots |
When TIME sat down with Unitree CEO Wang Xingxing last month for our latest cover story, the founder of the world’s leading humanoid robotics company was at pains to underscore the benefits of Great Power collaboration over competition. “Only by working together can we accelerate technological breakthroughs, which will ultimately benefit the entire world,” Wang said from the company’s Hangzhou headquarters. “If we can leverage more powerful AI and robotics, we can transition global civilization to the next tier altogether. At that point, many of the disputes we see today might naturally cease to exist.” |
Lofty aspirations, though the path ahead might be more complicated. On Tuesday, the Trump Administration unveiled import bans on new Chinese robots and power inverters, citing threats of data theft, cyberattacks, and unfair competition. The move spotlights how human robotics have catapulted to the frontline of national security discussions. Morgan Stanley predicts there could be more than 1 billion humanoids in use by 2050, when the industry could be worth $5 trillion. |

Chinese authorities are also alive to the revolutionary potential of humanoids. As early as 2023, Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted robotics as a key example of “new growth drivers” destined to transform production and lifestyle in echoes of computers and smartphones. Today, China boasts over 140 companies making humanoids—many receiving varying levels of state support—of which Wang’s Unitree is the clear leader, shipping over 5,500 units last year, a quarter of the global market. |
Preventing China from steaming ahead as it has on countless other technologies—from solar panels to drones to electric vehicles—is the clear goal of the new U.S. import curbs. China, however, has vowed not to take the latest restrictions lying down, with its embassy in Washington pledging to “take all necessary measures in response to any action that causes material harm to its interests.” |
