IN TODAY’S BRIEF 760,000 lose Obamacare coverage Heatwaves after the Paris agreement Trump’s Greenland deal The priest standing by for 31 kids DoorDash payout Back to school in Gaza         READ THIS FIRST Trump Administration to cancel Obamacare coverage for 760,000 over alleged fraud Andrew Harnik—Getty Images Trump Administration officials on Tuesday announced it would terminate Obamacare coverage for 760,000 enrollees, alleging widespread fraud.  Vice President JD Vance, who leads a White House task force aimed at eliminating fraud, said while speaking to reporters that $2.2 billion in taxpayer funds would be saved by removing the hundreds of thousands of Affordable Care Act (ACA) enrollees from the public insurance marketplaces. “We expect that most of these people are fraudulently enrolled,” Vance said. He added that the Administration would also work to verify the eligibility of roughly 419,000 additional enrollees by ensuring that they are legal residents of the U.S. and meet the income threshold to receive Obamacare coverage.  The Administration will also place a six month moratorium on new health insurance brokers and agents, who help individuals sign up for health plans, Vance said.  The Administration’s move to eject fraudulent enrollees from the Obamacare insurance marketplaces is the latest in its broader efforts to crack down on fraud. —Connor Greene         SPONSORED Hiring abroad? Calculate your hiring costs         THE CONTEXT The past decade’s emissions are already driving worse heat waves in Europe Marcelo del Pozo—Getty Images The heat waves Europe has seen in recent years were made measurably more intense because of the greenhouse gases emitted since the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, according to a new study published Tuesday in Geophysical Research Letters.   “We found that the emissions released since the signing of this Paris Agreement in 2015 have substantially and significantly increased the intensity of Europe's recent individual heat waves,” says lead author Jared Trok, a Ph.D. student in Earth system science at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. The study also determined that this held true for Europe’s hottest week in every individual year since at least 2021. The findings come on the heels of this summer's back-to-back heat waves on the continent, which broke heat records and contributed to at least 35,000 excess deaths.  The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change adopted by nearly 200 countries in December 2015, with the aim of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial temperatures. A decade later, the world is expected to blow past that 1.5°C target. —Simmone Shah         HAPPENING NOW Trump signs Greenland deal Brendan Smialowski—Getty Images President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed a deal on the security of the semi-autonomous Danish territory of Greenland, in a bid to end the standoff over the strategic island.  The deal follows Trump’s repeated threats to annex Greenland—a move he insisted was a matter of “national security,” on account of the mineral-rich Arctic territory’s positioning between the U.S., Russia, and Europe.  The signed agreement notably stops short of Trump's call for the U.S. to ​take over Greenland as a U.S. territory. Instead, in a speech at the U.N. General Assembly, Trump said the deal gives the U.S. "permanent control over security and all other needs on that territory" and emphasized that "no U.S. adversary will ever be permitted to establish a military ​presence in Greenland ​any more, or ⁠make sensitive investments there without our express written approval." In her absence, they had lived with Vidal Rivas, an Episcopal priest who had agreed to be their temporary guardian if immigration authorities took her into custody.  Rivas’ wife slept beside the children to soothe them while their mother was gone. When his wife became sick, Rivas took on more of the childcare. The experience was demanding. But Rivas, 62, stands ready to do the same for 29 other children whose immigrant parents have named him as their standby guardian. Two more families are making similar arrangements with him, he says. “I feel a lot of responsibility, and a very heavy weight,” says Rivas, who has served at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in suburban Washington for nearly two decades. Inside the church hangs a sign bearing the same message in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole: “We love migrants.” For Rivas, the words have become a commitment to the families who fear an immigration arrest could suddenly separate them from their children.   Rivas began encouraging families to name him as a standby guardian last year, shortly after President Donald Trump returned to office. Nearly all of the parents are Salvadoran, like him, and have been bracing for the Trump Administration to end Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, for roughly 170,000 immigrants from that country. “It's not easy for parents to know that they could be arrested and their children could be left [in the U.S.] without them,” says Rivas. Under Maryland law, parents can designate a standby guardian in the event they are arrested by immigration authorities. The designated guardian automatically becomes the child’s legal guardian for six months, with the possibility to extend if approved by a judge. Rivas says some parents have talked to him about contingency plans in case they remain in a detention center for longer. Maryland was among the first states to revise its guardianship laws to help prevent the children of detained immigrants from entering foster care.
