The best health-related inventions of the year
By Angela Haupt
Editor, Health and Wellness

Every year, TIME highlights the most impactful new products and ideas that are changing the way we live. Some of these are mind-boggling (a new shape), some are fun (high-tech bird-watching), and others are designed to improve our health.

Take the fitness category in this year’s Best Inventions list, which was released today. The COROS Heart Rate Monitor allows you to wear your heart (rate) on your sleeve for the most accurate tracking, while a fancy pair of Adidas sneakers might help runners set a personal record. A leakproof water bottle that's gone viral on the internet makes hydration fun.

Meanwhile, in the medical care category, a new set of blood tests from Thermo Fisher Scientific allows for more accurate preeclampsia diagnosis, and a company known for its smart coffee mug has invented a reusable shipping box that keeps medication in transit cool. Plus, no list would be complete without mention of Novo Nordisk’s semaglutides—the generic name for both Ozempic and Wegovy.

AN EXPERT VOICE

"We need strong food policy from governments. It shouldn’t be up to individuals to try to fight against the food environment, because ultra-processed foods are designed…to make you want more of them and make you overeat, and they’re everywhere."

Felice Jacka, co-director of the Food and Mood Centre at Australia's Deakin University
