Hello minor minders, What a week in childminding news! If we learned anything from the immigration crisis, it is that most Americans have strong feelings that children should not be separated from their parents. This is a parenting newsletter and aspires to be apolitical, but in the immigration debate, it seems hard to argue with the notion that the children are the most blameless participants of the tussle over who should and should not be allowed into America and under what circumstances and yet the primary victims of the consequences. I thought the cover of TIME magazine, for all the controversy it caused, summed up that point pretty well. If you have any ideas you want to share, I'm still at belinda.luscombe@time.com or @luscombeland on Twitter. P.S. If you like this newsletter, please pass it on to a friend. Congrats to the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, who gave birth (to a girl!) on June 21, and will become the first sitting head of state to ever take maternity leave. She's taking six weeks, after which her husband will be the stay at home parent. In her absence the Deputy Prime Minister will fill in but she'll be kept fully appraised of what's going on. And she'll still be paid. New Zealanders get 22 weeks of paid maternity leave and may soon get more. "I'm not a trailblazer," Ardern said in a news conference in January. "I am not the first woman to multitask. I am not the first woman to work and have a baby. I know these are special circumstances but there will be many women who will have done this well before I have." TIME

The World Health Organization has now recognized "gaming disorder" as a unique mental health condition. That probably does not mean your Fortnite-obsessed child has a dysfunction, however. Here's why. TIME

If you have time for a really long read and want to know everything you can about children who want to change genders and whether or not that is a phase of generalized adolescent anxiety that eventually will be grown out of, or a genuine medical issue, or something else entirely this story is the most balanced I've seen so far. It covers all the bases. At length. The Atlantic.

In America—and probably lots of other places as well—paternity leave is a benefit only available to those who are well-off and educated, even though it is just as useful, if not more so, for those who do not work in an office.  Fatherly

If your kid is in good health and has a reasonably good diet, then you probably don't need to give them a dietary supplement. About a third of kids take such supplements and now medical experts are beginning to sound the alarm, saying there is no benefit to them in healthy children, and there may be some harm, especially with the Omega-3 fatty acids and body-building products. Some promising results emerged from a new study that looked at the efficacy of parent-child therapy in treating depression in toddlers. "The study provides very promising evidence that an early and brief psychotherapeutic intervention that focuses on the parent-child relationship and on enhancing emotion development may be a powerful and low-risk approach to the treatment of depression," Dr Joan Luby, the lead author of the study, said in a statement. Dr. Mona Hanna Attisha, pediatrician who revealed there was lead in Flint's drinking water, and mother of two,

"This [crisis in Flint] highlights the need for parents to continue to speak out, to continue to be your child's most important advocate because that's what you are. And to raise your voices. In this story and so many stories, it's been parents who have changed the game "
