10 ways to respond to someone's bad news

When someone shares bad news with me, I often develop "blank-page syndrome"—stammering that I'm sorry, but wishing I had something helpful to say. That inspired me to ask experts for their favorite ways to respond in these situations. One of my (many) favorites: “You are doing such a good job at being strong and brave, and I wish you didn't have to.”
