Whether we realize it or not, parents regularly—in ways big and small—teach kids to make the world a better place. But how? When I try to express this hope and wish to my kids, I tend to use too many words. Here, it's put perfectly: "All you hope at the end of the day is that you leave [the world] better than you found it."
This time-honored sentiment was expressed by Ivan Adames, who raises funds for the Chicago Botanic Garden. We recently profiled Adames on Your Hot Job,a free career exploration platform from the editors of TIME for Kids. If you're looking to inspire your kids, I hope you'll check out the article. And here are five more of my favorites:
Maya Warren, an ice-cream scientist, creates flavors that trigger sweet memories.
Grace Buschiazzo, a marine biologist, helps sea turtles from rescue to release.
Joan Melendez Misner, an aerospace engineer, talks about what it takes to work at NASA.
Kamal Bell, a farmer and beekeeper, is founder and CEO of Sankofa Farms.
Gil Bransford, a sports statistician, shapes broadcasts from behind the scenes.
What jobs are your kids expressing an interest in? Or, if you had it to do all over again, what job would you pursue? You can reach me at andrea@time.com, as always.
Best, Andrea
