There are many current efforts to break Big Tech's grip on young people. In "Inside the Parent-Led Movement for Phone-Free Schools,"my colleague Charlotte Alter takes a close look at a growing constellation of grassroots advocates who have pushed states to pass a raft of new bills.
As Alter reports, "37 states have banned cell phones and other internet-connected devices during class." Despite significant support from parents across party lines, change comes slowly. Also, bans vary in degree: Many prohibit cell phone use during class, some are bell-to-bell (cell phones are also banned during lunch and between classes). Then there's the question of enforcement, which opens up a whole other can of worms.
I hope you'll read the article. What are your thoughts about the necessity of banning phones, and the feasibility of it? Write to me at andrea@time.com.
