It’s a new year! (I gather etiquette demands that I don’t wish you a happy new year this far into January, so I’ll leave it there.) But I hope you had a lovely holiday break—or at least one that wasn’t plagued by the recent surge in nasty norovirus, as mine was. Nothing brings extended family closer together than riding out a weeklong wave of illness under one roof.

And now, back to business. This week, I urge you to read “11 Ways to Respond When Someone Insults a Loved One’s Disability,” written by my colleague Angela Haupt. “I know I’m not the only one who’s noticed people are just, well, meaner these days,” she explains. “Experts say people with disabilities face a large amount of that incivility. Many advocates recommend standing up to the haters—but how?” Angela asked disability rights advocates for their favorite comebacks, and shares 11 strategies.

Have you faced this? Are you noticing changes in the way the world is treating people with disabilities? Write to me about this—or anything—at andrea@time.com.

Best,
Andrea
