| By Made by History / Produced by Olivia B. Waxman | One of the targets of President Trump and Elon's Musk's Department of Government Efficiency is the Department of Education. As historian Mallory Hutchings-Tryon explains, early federal efforts to address education began in the years after the Civil War. During the Cold War broad support for public education paved the way to the creation of the Department of Education, which played a key role in distributing funding and enforcing civil rights laws in schools. Over the years it has expanded access to education among low-income students and students with disabilities, but efforts to dismantle the Department could undermine these successes. | The History newsletter will be on hiatus for a week. The next edition will be sent out on March 6. | |

| | This week in 1957: Martin Luther King, Jr. | | The Feb. 18, 1957, cover of TIME |
| Boris Chaliapin |
| "As a kid, in the classic tradition of kids, Martin wanted to be a fireman. Then, hoping to treat man's physical ills, he planned to become a doctor. Becoming more deeply engrossed in the problems of his race, he turned his hopes to the law because 'I could see the part I could play in breaking down the legal barriers to Negroes.' At Morehouse, he came to final resolution. 'I had been brought up in the church and knew about religion,' says King, 'but I wondered whether it could serve as a vehicle to modern thinking. I wondered whether religion, with its emotionalism in Negro churches, could be intellectually respectable as well as emotionally satisfying.'" |

| | This week in 1970: Jane, Henry & Peter Fonda | | The Feb. 16, 1970, cover of TIME |
| Andy Warhol |
| "For the first time, Jane realized Henry's philosophy: less is more. 'You have to keep some of the mystery,' she concludes, in life as well as art. 'If you bring a plastic penis into the classroom as they do in Sweden, that removes all the mystery. If you go to bed with Human Sexual Response under your arm, things can get very boring.' The new unseducibility does not end at the set. Confesses Vadim: 'I do much more giving than Jane. In a way, in our relationship she is the man and I am the woman.' Her attitude on marriage remains a bit like Dad's: 'Forever is a very difficult word.'" |

| This week in 2000: Leonardo DiCaprio | | The Feb. 21, 2000, cover of TIME |
| Brigitte Lacombe |
| "But DiCaprio is desperate to find something important to discuss. 'This is T-I-M-E, dawg. This article has got to be about something bigger. It's got to be talking about the movie and its comment on society. Not to be too serious. God, that is serious,' he says, his Clintonian need to be liked getting the better of him. Then he starts to worry again. 'I know it's going to wind up being about the construction of what to make the article about. That's what it's going to be about: Why the hell is he on the cover of TIME magazine?' It's disorienting to interview someone who is this self-conscious." |
