What to Do if You’re Anxious About Flying Right Now
BY ANDREA DELBANCO Editor in Chief, TIME for Kids
I'm a nervous flyer. While many people categorize themselves that way, I lay claim to coming by it honestly, after an especially awful flight when I was 19, during which we assumed the crash-landing position and hit the runway without landing gear. All's well that ends well, but I'm no fun to fly with. I'm practical enough to fight through it, but it takes a toll on my whole family.
All of the recent news about air safety hasn't helped, and I'm not alone in feeling worse than ever about flying. TIME tackled this topic from many angles. My favorite is by Angela Haupt. "I'm an anxious traveler in the best of times—and after being glued to the coverage of recent horrific events, like the plane that flipped on its roof as it landed in Toronto yesterday, I've vowed to stay on the ground," she says. "Yet avoidance isn't the best coping technique when you're anxious—not to mention, it isn't always possible. I asked experts who specialize in aerophobia to share concrete strategies you can deploy if you're nervous about flying." Check out her story, "What to Do if You're Anxious About Flying Right Now." Folks who are a bit more driven by data should check out "What the FAA Layoffs Mean for Air Safety" and "Yes, Flying Is Safe in the U.S."
My next flight is in 13 days. But who's counting? I'm always here if you want to share your thoughts (and fears): andrea@time.com.
Best, Andrea
