Mother's Day is a good moment for reflection. This year, I'm facing a period of change, with my older daughter leaving for college in 98 days (not that I'm counting). For so long, my Mother's Day wish was time to myself. My husband would dutifully shuffle off to the park with our daughters so I could sleep past 7 a.m. and take an uninterrupted shower. Now, I'm greedy for time together, and the holiday gives me permission to insist on it. On Sunday, spending the afternoon with my mother and my daughters, I felt a level of gratitude I'd never have imagined in the early years.
I'm sharing this sappy sentiment with you because this community has proven to be kind and generous. But I know better when talking to new parents, who might have a hard time seeing that light at the end of the tunnel. Happily, Angela Haupt, a health and wellness editor at TIME, provides insightful alternatives in her recent story "The Worst Thing to Say to a New Mom." What were some memorable—for better and for worse—comments you heard in your early days of parenthood? Write to me at andrea@time.com. I'll reply, without platitudes.
Best, Andrea
