10 Questions to Ask Your Kid Besides “How Was School?”
BY ANDREA DELBANCO Editor in Chief, TIME for Kids
I kept written records of the first few words my babies said. That's how much I cherished their single-syllable utterances. In the toddler stage, they asked "Why?" several times per hour and babbled away, often incomprehensibly. In the golden years of early childhood, they shared everything (honestly, I often felt desperate for quiet). Then we hit a roadblock. Repeatedly asking about their day yielded almost no information at all. We tackled this by playing a variation on "peach and pit" or "rose and thorn" games at dinnertime, requiring each family member to share a highlight and lowlight from their day. But it sometimes still felt like pulling teeth.
The fact is, many kids grunt a single word when asked about their day. "No one likes a one-word answer," says Angela Haupt, a health and wellness editor at TIME. "That's why, if you want to know how your kid really is, you need to think carefully about exactly what you ask them, plus when and how you do it." She spoke with experts to gather advice on which questions work best. Check out her article "10 Questions to Ask Your Kid Besides 'How Was School?'"
